Breeding trends in red Phalaenopsis

The incomparable Phalaenopsis Brother Purple

The history of Phalaenopsis hybridizing has seen many important stud plants in its hundred-plus year history. But there has never been a plant that caused such excitement and revolutionized breeding to such an extent in as short a time as Phalaenopsis Brother Purple (Golden Peoker x Brother Glamour). The hybrid was made by Mr. Yung Yu Lin of Brother Orchid Nursery in Taichung, Taiwan and registered in 1995. It has produced more offspring that received AOS awards in a shorter period of time than other plant in orchid history. In a period of approximately 16 months, Phal. Brother Purple was the parent of plants that received approximately 40 AOS awards.

Novelty or non-standard Phalaenopsis* breeding on any kind of scale is relatively recent. Although a few "non-standard" crosses had been made regularly over the years, yellow and red breeding only began in earnest about 40 years ago when the late Lewis Vaughn crossed Phal. Doris and Phal. mannii to produce Phal. Golden Louis. Yellow breeding is now fairly stable and new yellow hybrids, both clear and red-marked, are readily available. But red breeding has never been easy. Due to problems with fertility, flower size and low flower count, a relatively small number of flasks of red expectancy seedlings were ever available. Phal. Golden Buddha was one of the first really fertile and readily available red Phalaenopsis.

*As a rule, large whites, pinks, candy stripes and French spots are considered standards. Most people would now probably include multi/miniflora Phalaenopsis (or at least the smaller flowered versions of the previously enumerated standards) as standards as well.

The original cross of Phal. Golden Buddha (Cher Ann ‘Lista’, HCC/AOS x Spica ‘Florence’, AM/AOS) was made by Peter Lista and registered by him in 1977. Because of Mr. Lista’s limited growing space and Stewart’s Orchids’ need for Phalaenopsis, there was an arrangement whereby he sent seedpods to Stewart’s and received seedlings in return. So Stewart’s Orchids offered first-generation seedlings of Phal. Golden Buddha on a large scale. Then selective breeding began. Sib crosses were made by many hybridizers and, now, several generations later, many exceptional clones are available and being used in breeding. Six clones received AOS awards. Phal. Golden Buddha has been used to produce about 250 hybrids, resulting in many outstanding offspring. Phal. Cordova is probably its most well-known red offspring but the fertility of this offspring is nowhere near the fertility of the parent, Phal. Golden Buddha.

Now, in just a couple of years, Phal. Brother Purple has revolutionized red Phalaenopsis breeding. It is very fertile, passes on good flower count, great color, fine shape as well as its exceptional fertility. An added "bonus" is the fact that both Phal. Brother Purple and its offspring tend to bloom on relatively small plants.

In 1995, I first saw a flower of Phal. Brother Purple on the breeding bench at Brother Orchid Nursery in Taiwan. It was my second trip to Taiwan and I did a lot of observing, asking very few questions. I saw the flower at the end of the day after it had been taken from the plant and the pollen used to make a hybrid. I knew then that I wanted (actually had to have) the progeny that would result. But where did Phal. Brother Purple come from? What is it that accounts for its amazing capacity to produce outstanding progeny?

As stated above, Phal. Brother Purple is a cross of Phal. Golden Peoker and Phal. Brother Glamour. Looking at the parentage of the plant, we can see the following statistical breakdown:

34 % white (aphrodite, amabilis, rimestadiana)
19 % gigantea
16 % fasciata
14 % lueddemanniana
6 % amboinensis
5 % violacea
6 % - sumatrana, equestris, stuartiana, schilleriana, sanderiana

N.B. Any geneticist will tell you that statistical analyses may be interesting but they do not necessarily prove anything because we cannot tell how much any plant (or human, for that matter) inherits from any given ancestor without a DNA analysis.

A look at the parents

In 1983, Phal. Golden Peoker was registered by Brother Orchid Nursery as a hybrid between Phal. Misty Green (Bamboo Baby x Barbara Moler) and Phal. Liu Tuen-Shen (Golden Sands x gigantea). Two of the four grandparents had received a coveted First Class Certificate from the American Orchid Society (Phal. Golden Sands ‘Canary’, FCC/AOS and Phal. Bamboo Baby ‘Coqui’, FCC/AOS) and a third (Phal. Barbara Moler) has several awarded cultivars. With a pedigree like this, high expectations were held for this cross. Although many cultivars of Phal. Golden Peoker have a distinct yellow base color, the clone chosen as the standard bearer of Brother Orchid Nursery has a white base colour with heavy fuchsia spotting and particularly round petals and is, when adult, quite floriferous. This ‘Brother’ clone was meristemmed beginning many years ago and is probably the most widely distributed offspring of Phal. Liu Tuen-Shen in the world. In 1991, Phal. Golden Peoker ‘Brother’ received an AM of 81 points when exhibited in Puerto Rico.

The other parent of Phal. Brother Purple, Phal. Brother Glamour was registered in 1992, also by Brother Orchid Nursery, as a hybrid between Phal. Paifang’s Queen (Mount Kaala x lueddemanniana) and Phal. Hualien Glamour (Liu Tuen-Shen x Tainan’s Golden Stars). Phal. Paifang’s Queen is a very colorful flower and is the basis for the Taiwanese pattern of spotting and blotching. It was the result of crossing a large white flower and an intensely colored species. The result was a reasonably sized, intensely colored flower: however, the inflorescences are somewhat long and sparsely flowered and the flowers recurved in much the same way as the Phal. lueddemanniana parent. This hybrid is similar in breeding to Phal. Carnival (White Medallion x lueddemanniana), a hybrid made in North America in 1969 and now known mainly for two of its offspring, Phal. Red-Hot Chili and Phal. Carnival Queen. In the US, many hybridizers were reluctant to use Phal. Carnival and its offspring because of its recurved form. However, in Taiwan, Phal. Paifang’s Queen was used extensively despite recurving because of its intense color. This is due to a significant difference in culture. The color red has the meaning of success and good fortune in the Chinese culture and, therefore, red flowers are easily sold despite what may be considered less than perfect form.

The other parent of Phal. Brother Glamour, Phal. Hualien Glamour, is virtually unknown in North America: however, three of its four grandparents have received FCCs (Phal. Golden Sands ‘Canary’, FCC/AOS twice and Phal. George Vasquez ‘Eureka’, FCC/AOS) and the fourth is the species, Phal. gigantea. The most important clone of Phal. Brother Purple for hybridizing was the ‘Brother’ clone, although one hybrid was made with the ‘Lung Ching’ clone [Phal. Brother Pecan (Brother Purple ‘Lung Ching’ x Cassandra)].

The first Phal. Brother Purple hybrid to reach the judging tables was Phal. Brother Supersonic (x Phal. Sara Lee ‘Eye Dee’). The clone ‘Kathy’s Beau’ was given an Award of Merit on January 28, 1998 with four ruby red flowers and four buds on one branched inflorescence. In general, this hybrid produced a great deal of variation ranging from spotted flowers over yellow or white to solid red flowers. Needless to say, it is usually the solid (or near-solid) red flowers that are remarked by the AOS judges and subsequently awarded. To date, there are about a dozen AOS awards to this grex as well as an Award of Quality. (A list of all awarded clones of Phal. Brother Purple hybrids at the time this article was written can be found below.) It should be pointed out that the overall quality of this cross is very high and a large number of the plants show exceptional promise. In addition to great color, the flowers tend to be flat with near-perfect shingling. As well, it is very fertile so we can expect to see many hybrids from it.

Different hybridizers have chosen to follow different paths with Phal. Brother Supersonic, as with all Phal Brother Purple progeny. The most important point to note for hybridizers is the fact that Brother Orchid Nursery has bred Phal. Brother Purple offspring to plants that do not have Phal. Brother Purple in their pedigree. In other words, the Phal. Brother Purple offspring have always been outcrossed in Taiwan. Some hybridizers are doubling up (i.e. linebreeding) on Phal. Brother Purple, breeding one Phal. Brother Purple hybrid to another. Does Mr. Lin of Brother Orchid Nursery know something that North American breeders do not or is he just attempting to produce something totally different? Once all these seedlings start to bloom, we will all know the answer.

The next hybrid of Phal. Brother Purple to receive an AOS award was Phal. Brother Precious Stones (x Phal. Brother Fancy). The original hybrid was made with Phal. Brother Fancy ‘Lung Ching’. About six months later, the hybrid was remade using a different clone of Brother Fancy (‘B#250’) but this remake did not receive the same wide distribution in North America as the original cross. Almost all of the AOS-awarded progeny are from the original cross.

On February 12th, 1998, at the Coral Gables Orchid Society Show, Phal. Brother Precious Stones received its first award. The clone ‘Sedona’s Emperor’ received an AM of 81 points. On March 10, 1998 at the Miami Judging Centre, another five additional clones of Phal. Brother Precious Stones were awarded.

Some people believe that Phal. Brother Precious Stones is the best red hybrid ever made. In addition to being remade using Phal. Brother Fancy ‘Ping Tong’, AM/AOS, Phal. Brother Precious Stones has been bred to all kinds of reds and pinks, large and small. There has also been some linebreeding on Phal. Brother Purple and at least one cross where Phal. Brother Precious Stones was bred back to its parent, Phal. Brother Fancy.

Another important hybrid is Phal. Brother Oconee (x Phal. Carmela’s Pixie ‘Lung Ching’), which has been remade twice. This hybrid frequently blooms while still in community pot, producing deep dark purple flowers with a satiny sheen. Because of the size and floriferousness of this cross, it may be a new route on the road to the breeding of red multifloras.

Many plants of the hybrid Dtps. Brother Turkey (x Dtps. Ton Jy Pecan ‘Ho’) appear somewhat similar to a standard pink. This is not surprising considering that Dtps. Happy Valentine is a parent of Dtps. Ton Jy Pecan. The awarded clones have iridescent pinkish purple, intense fuchsia or dark magenta flowers that are almost 3½" across. Inflorescences can be branched, even on first-bloom seedlings. Within a one-week period in 1999, three clones of this hybrid each received Awards of Merit.

Another hybrid, Phal. Brother Pirate King (x Phal. Fortune Buddha ‘Tinny’) is one of the first times that Phal. Brother Purple was bred to a yellow flower. The results were quite variable. The ‘Pecas’ clone (HCC – 78 points, March 17, 1999, Puerto Rico Show) had flowers that were yellow-green overlaid with concentric spots while many other clones appear solid burgundy or cordovan.

Everybody has a favorite hybrid. Of all the Phal. Brother Purple offspring seen to date, my favorite is Phal. Brother Sally Taylor (x Phal. Super Stupid ‘Brother’). The first awarded clone, ‘Crownfox’ received an HCC of 78 points on March 27th, 1999 in West Palm Beach with 10 flowers and 6 buds on 3 inflorescences. The flowers were white overlaid with intense red-purple, appearing almost solid. Phal. Brother Sally Taylor can be quite variable ranging from a yellow to cream base color overlaid with varying amounts of red, often with a striking picotee.  There are now a total of 3 awarded clones.

Max Thompson, an accredited AOS judge and chairman of the Great Plains Judging Centre, was lucky when he purchased a flask of Dtps. Brother Wedding Waltz (x Dtps. Taisuco Love ‘B#10’). Not only did he receive 3 AOS awards on individual plants of the hybrid but he also exhibited 12 plants of this hybrid and was awarded a coveted Award of Quality, which is given to both the exhibitor and the breeder, Brother Orchid Nursery.

Dtps. Brother Tom Walsh (x Dtps. Brother Julius ‘Lung Ching’) is another outstanding hybrid of Phal. Brother Purple. Dtps. Brother Julius is a hybrid between Dtps. Okay Seven and Phal. Carmela’s Pixie. The flowers of Dtps. Brother Julius are generally on the small side (6-7 cm) but can make up for it by exceptionally deep colour, as is the case with the ‘Lung Ching’ clone. Dtps. Brother Tom Walsh ‘Bronstein-Walsh’ clone received an AM of 80 points on May 1st, 1999 and was the first awarded plant of this grex. It had flowers that were 9.5 cm x 9.4 cm natural spread. Considering the pedigree, this is huge and is in fact one of the largest awarded hybrid of Phal. Brother Purple to date. The colour was described as stunning, intense fuchsia overlaid on soft pink. In this grex, many plants have flowers best described as irridescent, fluorescent and/or brilliant. This will be another important parent in further hybridizing. In time, it is probable that it too will receive an Award of Quality, which has already been attempted but the plants were deemed too young.

One as yet unnamed grex and one (believed to be) unshown may prove to be as good or better than those we have seen for consistency and overall quality. The hybrid Phal. Queen Spot ‘B#1’ x Phal. Brother Purple has flowers that are usually solid, relatively large and range in color from orange to red to red purple. No plants of this hybrid has yet been awarded but it should prove itself in the relatively near future.  The other hybrid Dtps. Sinica Knight x Phal. Brother Purple, now named Dtps. Brother Cortez Red, is striking. The flowers are large, relatively flat, intensely colored and well shingled. At least one has recently been awarded.

Phal. Brother Purple has made quite a splash. Once it had proved itself as a top-quality parent in its first few hybrids, Phal. Brother Purple seems now to have been bred to almost anything that was in bloom. The true measure of a stud plant can only be taken when many hybrids to different types of flowers have been made. Because of the number of hybrids in the works, the true measure of Phal. Brother Purple should be relatively easy to measure in the next few years. Since stem propagations of the plant became available to North American hybridizers, many hybrids were made and should be available now or very shortly. Care must be taken not to double up on some of the shortcomings of Phal. Brother Purple. In particular, Phal. Brother Purple is somewhat recurved, a trait seen in many of its progeny, and it should only be bred to the flattest flowers available.

The next few years should prove to be very interesting for those interested in red Phalaenopsis breeding. With hundreds of hybrids from Phal. Brother Purple and its progeny in various stages from wishful thinking through seedpods and flasks to community pots and seedlings, we can now expect to see relatively large, well-presented flowers in every shade of red. The standards in red breeding have been raised and fertility problems in red breeding seems to be a thing of the past. In many hybrids, red breeding is now producing consistent high quality. Can the day of the five-inch, perfectly shingled red flower be all that far off?

The opinions expressed in the plant of the month articles are those of Howard S. Ginsberg and are based on various discussions, observations and research which includes American Orchid Society Awards by James R. Fisher and David A. Bishop (available from the American Orchid Society) as well as the Wildcatt Database (available from the Wildcatt Database Company). The Wildcatt Database may not be perfect but it is far and away better than whatever is in second place.
